“The tattoo was the biggest mistake in my life. It was like being cursed.” Mike Regola, Swansea.

Tattoo removal with peace of mind

We all have things in our past that we’d rather forget – a phase we were going through, a relationship, or just a moment of madness. Usually, we can just move on and start afresh. A tattoo, however, is a visible and sometimes a very unwelcome reminder of a bad decision.

For some, it is a source of deep psychological stress.  Perhaps it makes people laugh, or simply shy away - in any case, an unwanted tattoo often causes distress and may contribute to feelings of low self-esteem – or just an unwillingness to expose the affected part of the body – a real difficulty when trying to establish a new relationship.

An unwanted tattoo can also create difficulties when applying for jobs or are considered for promotion with visible tattoos increasingly seen as unacceptable in a professional environment.  Tattoos to the hands and face are often a particular cause for concern with social stigma attached and consequent long-term loss of self-confidence.

Why Laserase does not recommend surgical or chemical tattoo removal treatment

Tattoo removal is difficult.  The pigment is sealed in by a tough network of collagen fibres.  The layer in which the pigment is trapped can be surgically cut away, then replaced with skin grafts, leaving scar material both where the tattoo was and where the graft was taken from. Sometimes, excision is actually the only way to remove stubborn pigment and Laserase centres have either surgeons working in house to excise unwanted areas, or can refer you to a cost-effective surgical solution.

Tattoo pigment can also be removed through chemically destroying the tissue containing the pigment with concentrated salt, acids or alkali solutions but the surrounding skin is inevitably damaged, significant scarring is to be expected and the pigment is not always removed.

Lasers are the most effective way to remove a tattoo

The only way to remove the pigment, without damaging the surrounding tissues, is with Q-switched laser technology.  It’s a proven technique with more than 20 years of evidence behind the techniques. It involves far less risk of skin damage than other techniques and Laserase are experts.

This might go elsewhere – we have a section on other methods

And sometimes, a tattoo is just not good enough and needs removing – or fading down – to enable a new tattoo to be applied; a better option than the standard deep-black cover-up.

The good news is that most tattoos can be effectively removed – but there are some things that you need to know before you commit to any provider for treatment.
