Tattoo removal with Q-switched lasers
Q-switched lasers work by shattering the pigment particles deep within the skin, allowing your own immune system to then scavenge and remove that pigment. The tattoo is consequently faded in layers, so multiple treatments are always required in everything but the very simplest tattoos.
Most pigments, respond well to the laser, although more than one ‘colour’ of laser light is needed to remove multi-coloured tattoos. Laserase centres will use at least three colours of laser light, delivered by high energy Q-switched lasers to provide the most effective treatments. Some pigments can be resistant to treatment with any laser, including a range of greens and many modern, pastel and vibrant colours. Some pigments – especially whites – will actually darken when exposed to the laser and this pigment may –or may not respond further. You need expert advice to determine likely outcome and of course, Laserase has nearly 20 years of experience in tattoo removal.
How long will it take and what’s the cost?
Every tattoo is different and each individual responds differently, so the number of sessions required will vary. Analysis from within the Laserase network shows that amateur tattoos range between a single treatment to as many as 10 sessions with the average being 3 sessions. 90% of professional tattoos require between 5 to 20 sessions with the average being 10 sessions.
The bigger the tattoo the more time it will take and the higher the charge will be. As the tattoo fades, it will usually reduce in size and as it shrinks, the treatment price will be reduced accordingly.
The time for each session depends on the size of the tattoo - a small tattoo might take 5 minutes, where large or multiple tattoos could take an hour or more. Very large tattoos are usually split into smaller areas for treatment during different sessions for it is not a good idea to treat an area much bigger than a complete forearm at any one time.
