Tattoo removal on the rise as Valentine's Day approaches Posted on 26/1/12 by Dr Dev Malhotra and Dr Helen Fernandez

We’re fast approaching Valentine’s Day and there seems to be a surge in celebrities reported to be getting laser tattoo removal performed on previously meaningful markings. At the tail-end of last week it was reported that actress Eva Longoria was entering the final stages of having the tattoo on her neck removed. The tattoo etched on her neck is ‘nine’ to represent the basketball shirt number of NBA star and former husband Tony Parker.

Longoria also has the date of their nuptials tattooed on her wrist but it is has not yet been reported that she is having laser tattoo removal performed on this inking too. Longoria went to the imaginatively titled Dr. Tattoff clinic in Beverly Hills to have the procedure done.

There are also rumours that Cheryl Cole is considering having laser tattoo removal on her infamous ‘Mrs C’ neck tattoo which she got to celebrate her high-profile marriage to footballer Ashley Cole. The couple divorced in 2010 and the singer has reportedly been considering tattoo removal or alteration since the split. Cole is well known for her tattoos with large designs on her lower back, barbed wire designs on her upper thighs and a delicate etching on her hand.

If you read our blog regularly you might remember that we wrote about the controversy surrounding X-Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos’s tattoo which she brandished at the beginning of every episode of the 2011 series run. It was thought that the script etching of The Female Boss – Tulisa’s nickname which, coincidentally, happens to be the name of her perfume brand – on the judge’s forearm might breach strict Ofcom regulations on promotion of products by show talent. This week the media regulator concluded that the singer had not breached regulations, although spin-off show The Xtra Factor was found to have given “undue prominence” to the perfume the week following its launch. It just goes to show, however, the conflicts that can arise at work around the issue of tattoos. Each of our Laserase clinics across the UK will regularly consult with people who are seeking laser tattoo removal due to job concerns.

And finally…

The Daily Mail has this week reported on a seemingly growing trend for mothers getting tattoos dedicated to their babies. While actress Angelina Jolie is cited as having chosen a slightly more esoteric design – the birthplace co-ordinates of all her children on her upper arm – the everyday mother appears to opt for more literal expressions of affection; choosing portraits or feet and hand prints as shown in this image.
